Back to School: Cybersecurity Tips for Families and Staff

As the new school year starts, it’s not just schedules and supplies that matter. Back to school is also prime time for online scams and risky device use, so a quick security check can go a long way.

Scammers send emails and texts that look like they’re from schools or payment portals, asking you to click a link to “update details” or “pay fees.” Treat any unexpected message that asks for personal information or passwords with caution, and when in doubt, go directly to the official website or contact the school to confirm.

Take a moment to clean up accounts and devices. Use strong, unique passwords or passphrases for school portals and email, turn on multi‑factor authentication, keep devices updated, and make sure laptops and tablets have security software installed.

Finally, talk openly about digital habits. Encourage kids and staff to pause before clicking links or opening attachments, be careful what they share about school and location, and avoid logging into important accounts over public Wi‑Fi. Making cyber safety part of the back‑to‑school routine helps protect grades, accounts and personal information all year. Reach out to Bernie Orglmeister at support@skyviewtek.com or call 610-590-5006.
