Wi-Fi is convenient. But not every business device should depend on it.
A reliable office network is not completely wired or completely wireless. The best setup is usually a mix of both, based on how each device is used.
Use Wi-Fi where mobility matters. Hardwire devices where consistency matters most.
Devices that should usually be hardwired:
- Desktop computers that stay in one place
- Servers and network storage
- Printers and scanners
- VoIP phones
- Wireless access points
- Security cameras and door-access systems
- Conference-room equipment
- Point-of-sale terminals
- Backup appliances and other critical infrastructure
- Wired Ethernet connections are generally more stable and less affected by walls, distance, wireless interference, signal strength, and network congestion than Wi-Fi.
Devices that work well on Wi-Fi:
- Laptops
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Guest devices
- Hot-desk workstations
- Equipment that needs to move throughout the office
Wi-Fi gives your team the flexibility to work from anywhere in the office. But it is a shared connection, so too many devices, poor access-point placement, and nearby interference can affect performance.
The goal is not to run cables to everything. It is to give the most reliable connection to the devices your business relies on most.
Hardwire what cannot afford to disconnect. Use Wi-Fi where mobility matters.
