Who Has Administrator Access in Your Business?

“Everyone has admin access. It’s just easier.”

But does everyone need permission to install software, change security settings, or manage user accounts? Depending on the system, administrator access can give someone control over much more than their own work.

That access should reflect what their job actually requires, not a shortcut taken when their account was first set up.

It’s worth checking whether anyone still has elevated access from an old role or a temporary project. Your IT team should be able to explain which accounts have administrator permissions, who owns them, and why that access is needed.

Even employees who manage your technology should use a standard account for everyday tasks like email and web browsing, with a separate administrator account for work that requires it. That helps limit what an accidental download or compromised everyday account could affect.

The goal isn’t to make work harder. It’s to give your team the access they need without giving every account more control than necessary.
